Homeless in Seattle

This is a summary of an article (The Politics of Ruinous Compassion) written by Chris Rufo on the topic of homelessness in Seattle Washington. The article in its entirety may be found at https://www.discovery.org/a/20243/
Mr. Rufo has identified three myths as a result of his study.
Myth #1: the homeless are working full-time but can't get ahead. According to King County’s own survey only 7.5% of the homeless report working full time despite record low unemployment, record job growth, and a record high $15minimum wage. Eighty percent of the homeless suffer from drug and alcohol addiction and thirty percent suffer serious mental illness including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
Myth #2: The homeless are “our neighbors” and native to Seattle. According to the cities owned data, 51.1% of Seattle's homeless came in from outside the city limits. More rigorous academic studies in cities like San Francisco suggest that at least 40 and 50% of the homeless moved to those cities in search of a permissive culture and generous services. There is no reason to believe Seattle is any different.
Myth #3: The street homeless want help but there aren't enough services. County data reveal that 39.5% of homeless refuse shelter claiming (“there are too many rules”) or
(“The shelters are too crowded”) 32.6%. Others refuse shelter because they do not want to change their lifestyle.
The above myths promote what sociologists call pathological altruism or “altruism in which attempts to promote the welfare of others instead results in unanticipated harm”. Seattle’s campaign of compassion has devolved into permissiveness, enablement, crime, and disorder. Public complaints about homeless encampments include theft, drugs, fighting, rape, murder, explosions, prostitution, assaults, needles, and feces. Police are being pressured not to arrest people for “homelessness-related offenses”. The use of crack, methamphetamine, and heroin “has been largely legalized in the city over the past several years.
Mr. Rufo has identified four groups of people contributing to the above problems.
#1 The Socialist Revolutionaries: This is a group of people who identify capitalism as the single cause from which all problems emerge. According to this narrative Amazon, Starbucks, Microsoft, and Boeing generate tremendous amounts of wealth for themselves driving up the price of housing and pushing the working class irreversibly towards poverty, inequality, and despair. However a King County Point in time study reveals only 6% of the homeless cited rent increases connected to their being homeless. Instead homeless people site a wide range other problems including domestic violence, incarceration, mental illness, family conflict, medical conditions, breakups, eviction, addiction, and job loss—as greater contributors to becoming homeless. Rent increases alone do not seem to push people into the streets. Instead, the vast majority of working and middle-class residents manage to respond to economic pressure in a variety of common sense ways: moving to a less expensive neighborhood, downsizing to a smaller apartment, taking on a roommate, moving in with family, or simply leaving the city. These socialist revolutionaries site “capitalism’s moral failure” as justification for their policies of rent control, public housing, minimum wage increases, and punitive corporate taxation.
#2 The Compassion Brigades: These groups of people are the moral crusaders of homelessness policy. They advocate to legalize street camping on miles of public sidewalks, legalize RV camping on all city streets, and preventing the city’s Navigation Teams from cleaning up tent cities. The compassion brigades have captured the local political vocabulary about homelessness and elevated a series of myths into excepted wisdom. They play on the hearts of those concerned about social justice.
#3. The homeless—industrial complex: This is the group that benefits from the millions of dollars that are spent on homelessness every year. These are the social service agencies that are funded from massive public Service programs. Some CEO’s of these organizations earn in the range of $185,000 in annual compensation and some employee salaries are as high as $190,000 per year. A recent Seattle funded plan is to build “tiny house villages” subsidized by taxpayers. One such Village in Licton Springs cost $720,000 per year to operate—the police noted a 221% increase in reporting crimes and public disturbances. Mr. Rufo points out in his article “if apartments are made available at below market rents, demand for those units will always outstrip supply”. The city will continue to build and the homeless we'll continue to come indefinitely.

#4 The Addiction Evangelists: This group continues to use heroin and/or other substances and pass themselves off as experts on rehabilitation by virtue of their experience of using. They sometimes insinuate themselves into organizations whose goal is to solve the drug problem. Their philosophy is harm reduction for users but not necessarily for the public at large. Their unstated purpose is to have taxpayers subsidize their continued use. In Seattle there is a heroin on wheels project in which People’s Harm Reduction Alliance Will roam the city and allow addicts to shoot up under a nurse’s supervision.
The problem of heroin addiction and abuse of other substances is similar to other social problems such as divorce, domestic violence, and sexual abuse of children. It is very complex. Throwing money at the problem will only demonstrate how high money can bounce. A 1990’s book by Alice Baum and Donald Burnes views homelessness as “a condition of disengagement from ordinary society—from family, friends, neighborhood, church, and community…they see it as a relationship problem.

Mr Rufo’s article is 20 pages long…and then several pages of references that document his research on the subject. We found it very helpful in understanding the problem of homelessness and formulating solutions, which is covered in the last three pages. The above summary is intended to stimulate your interest in reviewing his entire paper. Thank you for visiting the Roarpa web site.

the killer side effects of trans treatments

high blood pressure 247139 640

July 24, 2018 Tony Perkins (Family Research Council.

We've all heard the lie that indulging someone's gender confusion is the compassionate response. But according to a new study, it might also be a deadly one.

In a stunning research project -- so large and credible that even the mainstream media can't ignore it -- doctors are finally exposing the dangers of transgenderism. And in a culture racing to redefine the sexes, not a moment too soon. Of course, we know how emotionally destructive the treatment can be from the testimonies of people who regret it. But pumping your body full of hormones is just as devastating physically, Kaiser Health warns.

In a study of 5,000 people who identify as transgender, men trying to become women were 80 to 90 percent more likely to have a stroke or heart attack. They also had a higher risk of blood clots from the estrogen. That's an astounding level of risk for anyone, let alone these patients, who are choosing to create an imbalance in their system. "This is the largest study of the health of transgender individuals on hormone therapy ever done," one of the authors, Dr. Darios Getahun, told NBC News. "Doctors and patients need to be aware of the possibility for increased health risks for transgender women." Read more-  https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20180724/killer-effects

A Right that Belongs to Prisoners, But NOT Elementary Students?

hand pointing at a sign that says I'm a victim 1616231 640

By Stephanie Curry, Esq. Public Policy Manager for Family Policy Alliance®
in 2012, federal prison guidelines required prisons to start considering “gender identity” when placing inmates. This meant a man could be issued women’s clothing, use women’s showers or even be transferred to an all woman’s prison by saying he identified as a woman, without having had a sex change operation. Just as disturbing is that a woman could be transferred to an all men’s prison as well. Once these guidelines were passed and implemented, the bureau of prisons (bop) was the target of multiple lawsuits from women who were threatened and abused as a result of the new policy.

The women of Fort Worth-    One group of prisoners who sued the BOP were female inmates in Fort Worth, Texas. Their lawsuits declared that it was dangerous and degrading for the Bureau of Prisons to allow men (who identified as women) into women’s bathrooms and showers. The behavior of the men caused the women to suffer “disgust, embarrassment, humiliation, stress, degradation, fear and loss of dignity.”
Certainly, prisoners live in a world very different than the one we’re accustomed to. But the Supreme Court has been very clear that prisoners have basic constitutional rights that belong to all citizens and cannot be taken away by the government. For example, prisoners have the right to be free from cruelty, inhumane treatment, and humiliation. This means even inmates retain the right to bodily privacy and dignity. CDC survey: More homosexual, questioning teens than ever

man in a hood 2933961 640

June 27, 2018

(WND) – America is doing a terrific job of pushing homosexuality in schools, and as a result, more of our kids are engaging in this behavior and adopting the identity.

A major Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study provides the gruesome stats.

This disastrous news should be major media headlines. A few progressives are happy, I'm sure, along with radical homosexual groups like GLSEN as well as the corrupt teachers' unions, the NEA and others.

But for most of us, the CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) paints a grim picture with dire consequences for the long-term well-being of our nation's youth.

In 2017, almost 15% (14.6%) of teens labeled themselves "gay, lesbian, bisexual or unsure." In 2015, that figure was 11.2%.  Read more-

Sexual Risk Behaviors: HIV, STD, & Teen Pregnancy Prevention

run 1321278 640
Many young people engage in sexual risk behaviors and experiences that can result in unintended health outcomes. For example, among U.S. high school students surveyed in 20171

  • 40% had ever had sexual intercourse.
  • 10% had four or more sexual partners.
  • 7% had been physically forced to have sexual intercourse when they did not want to.
  • 30% had had sexual intercourse during the previous 3 months, and, of these
    • 46% did not use a condom the last time they had sex.
    • 14% did not use any method to prevent pregnancy.
    • 19% had drunk alcohol or used drugs before last sexual intercourse.
  • Nearly 10% of all students have ever been tested for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).*

CDC data show that lesbian, gay, and bisexual high school students are at substantial risk for serious health outcomes as compared to their peers.

Sexual risk behaviors place youth at risk for HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and unintended pregnancy:

  • Young people (aged 13-24) accounted for an estimated 21% of all new HIV diagnoses in the United States in 2016.2
  • Among young people (aged 13-24) diagnosed with HIV in 2016, 81% were gay and bisexual males.
  • Half of the 20 million new STDs reported each year were among young people, between the ages of 15 to 24.3
  • Nearly 210,000 babies were born to teen girls aged 15–19 years in 2016. Read More-  https://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/sexualbehaviors/

Free speech: Use it or lose it

Thu Apr 19, 2018 - 1:59 pm EST
By Michael L. Brown

April 19, 2018 (LifeSiteNews.com) – For many years, I've said that when it comes to America, I'm more concerned with the absence of light than with the presence of darkness. In the same way, I'm more concerned with our failure to speak freely than with those who are trying to silence us.

This is not to deny that there is a frontal assault on our most fundamental freedoms. I've witnessed this firsthand and documented it for years.

Just this week, media researcher Brent Bozell sounded the alarm about this concerted attack. He said, "This is the emerging of the greatest censorship of free speech worldwide in the history of man. Now, let me explain this, the left is on a jihad against conservative thought. It's happening in academia, entertainment, business, religion, everywhere."   -Read More

Sexual Health Programs Susppended at Sequim Schools

By Erin Hawkins
Friday, March 16, 2018 1:30am
Sequim Gazette

Sequim School District recently halted a sexual health education program after Sequim superintendent Gary Neal deemed it not age-appropriate for students.
Neal said at the March 5 Sequim School Board meeting the Family Life and Sexual Health (FLASH) curriculum is on hold after several parents and staff expressed complaints to the district about the material not being appropriate nor completely scientifically accurate.
One of those parents, Jason Peterson, who has a daughter in sixth grade at Sequim Middle School, brought his concerns before the board last fall and again at a school board meeting on Feb. 20. He said the FLASH presentation given to his daughter and other sixth grade students weighted heavily on discussing gender identity and not scientifically- or medically-based sexual health education.
Peterson said his daughter came home upset after she attended the FLASH presentation held during a physical education class.
“She felt she was being encouraged to question her own gender identity,” he said.
Peterson said he was able to view the presentation and felt that more than half of its content was geared toward discussing gender identity when it should have been a much smaller percentage of the presentation.
He also said his daughter felt uncomfortable with some of the language used during the presentation.
“There was some really graphic language and she had never heard any of those terms until the class and she felt uncomfortable repeating them to me,” he said  Read more-  http://www.sequimgazette.com/news/sexual-health-education-program-suspended-at-sequim-schools/

Are you a Highly Rejecting Parent?
mother and son sitting on a blanket 1784371 640
A lot of people are concerned about new policies being adopted in schools around the country dealing with gender.
As gender hysteria continues its lap around the track, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that some people don’t want their kids being told that there is an infinite number of genders and they can pick anyone they want.

It is also true that schools are making plans to deal with uncooperative parents and, for the most part, parents have no idea.
With respect to a student who wants to change their gender, this policy from Massachusetts says:
In some cases, however, notifying parents carries risks for the student. Prior to notification of any parent or guardian regarding the transition process, school staff should work closely with the student to assess the degree to which, if any, the guardian will be involved in the process and must consider the physical and mental health, well-being, and safety of the transitioning student.”http://www.mafamily.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Trangender_GenderNonConforming_Policy_Westford.pdf
That’s right, if your child is dealing with serious emotional and psychological issues at school, they’re going to consult with your child to determine whether you should be alerted.
The term they use for the wrong kind of parents? “Highly rejecting" parents.
We know Washington State schools are adopting the same policies. Multiple teachers in Washington have told us confidentially about mandatory meetings they were part of in which they were specifically instructed not to tell parents about a child who was transitioning in school from grade school up to high school.
There’s a long list of problems with this scenario.
We’ll start with the fact,  that the lefts own literature shows that somewhere between 60 and 97 percent of minors who experience gender dysphoria will ultimately outgrow it.
If it’s likely a temporary phenomenon, why make permanent, physical or social changes?  Do we really want to give puberty blockers to an 11-year-old when in all probability their feelings of gender dysphoria are temporary?
Beyond that, however, this development reinforces the need for families to reassert the truth that children belong to their parents, not the government.
I know we’re all busy, but parents need to acknowledge that schools across the country are plotting how to keep parents in the dark about what is happening in their child’s life.
Is it happening at your child’s school?
I don’t know, but you better find out.
Get to know your local superintendent and principle. Run for school board.  Whatever you do, do not feed your kids to a system that is convinced you are a problem they are going to solve.

I’m a Pediatrician. Here’s What I Did When a Little Boy Patient Said He Was a Girl.
Michelle Cretella  December 11, 2017

“Congratulations, it’s a boy!” Or, “Congratulations, it’s a girl!”
As a pediatrician for nearly 20 years, that’s how many of my patient relationships began. Our bodies declare our sex.
Biological sex is not assigned. Sex is determined at conception by our DNA and is stamped into every cell of our bodies. Human sexuality is binary. You either have a normal Y chromosome, and develop into a male, or you don’t, and you will develop into a female. There are at least 6,500 genetic differences between men and women. Hormones and surgery cannot change this.
An identity is not biological, it is psychological. It has to do with thinking and feeling. Thoughts and feelings are not biologically hardwired. Our thinking and feeling may be factually right or factually wrong. Read more-

Reinventing Reality, One Democrat at a Time
November 14, 2017
Most of us didn't need a poll to show us that liberals have lost their grip on reality. But Pew Research Center is providing one anyway. In a survey that will probably leave you speechless about the radical bent of Barack Obama's party, Pew asked Americans what they really think about gender identity. If the results don't surprise you, check your pulse.
First, the good news. A majority of Americans (though far less than one might guess, 54 percent) still believe that a person's gender is "determined at birth." Fewer, 44 percent, think someone "can be a man or woman even if that is different than the sex they were assigned at birth." That's right. Only a 10-percent gap separates Americans on what, a decade ago, would have been a consensus issue. Now, after eight years of chipping away at the country's moral sensibilities with bathroom mandates, Caitlin Jenner homages, and Chelsea Manning pardons, the activist Left's quiet war on gender is having its effect.
But so far, it's a one-sided victory. An overwhelming number of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (80 percent) aren't playing these liberals' game of make believe. They think that a person is born whatever gender they truly are. Amazingly, an enormous number of Democrats and Democratic leaners disagree: 64 percent, to be exact. That's a jaw-dropping population of political misled and scientifically-misguided people. No wonder we're having to debate common-sense bathroom guidelines, driver's licenses, classroom pronouns, and military policy. With the exception of black Democrats and Hispanic Democrats, (55 percent and 41 percent, respectively), Obama's reality-optional politics have had a major effect on his party's agenda.
Breitbart broke down Pew's numbers and uncovered this stunner: "The survey," Neil Munro points out, "finds that Democrats with a bachelor's degree or more education are more likely than other Democrats to say a person's gender can be different from the sex they were assigned at birth. About three-quarters (77 percent ) of Democrats with a bachelor's degree or more say this, compared with 60 percent of Democrats with some college and 57 percent of those with a high school diploma or less. No such [education] divide exists among Republicans." In other words, the supposedly "more educated" class of Democrats are the ones denying science and basic biology. Republicans, by contrast, stand steadfastly behind a person's DNA as the defining factor of a person's gender -- regardless of their age, race, or education.
Asked if America has done enough to accommodate people who identify as transgender, only 32 percent say the country has gone "too far." Thirty-nine percent think we haven't gone far enough. They're the ones willing to sacrifice women and children's safety, national security, and religious liberty on the altar of liberal deception. They're the ones eager to discard reality as a means to a political end. But regardless of what they say, truth is not up for self-determination! And a nation that thinks otherwise not only deceives itself, but dooms itself as well.

The TextBook “Perfectly Normal” Isn't Used in the Port Angeles School District Yet
At least I'm not aware of it being used as a text book, although it is used in several schools across America as a text book for the kids in the sixth grade and lower. The Port Angeles Public Library has two copies in the children's section should you want to check it out for yourself. Or if you let your 8 year old go pick out his own books from the children's section, he might bring this one home.

National “Sexuality Standards” vs. Parental Rights?
by Candi Cushman
The Associated Press ran a story in nationwide news outlets promoting the advent of “national sexuality education standards.”
At first glance, this might seem intimidating to parents who assume that “national standards” refers to something mandated by the government whether parents like it or not.
But that’s a misleading title. What this actually amounts to is a wish list put together by some of the largest “safe sex,” abortion and homosexual advocacy groups in the nation—who are using this as a marketing campaign to get their agenda promoted in your local schools.
Upon examining these so-called standards, the first thing one notices, is that the promoters, developers and “advisory committee” members attributed in the report, include:
the nation’s largest teachers union , the National Education Association
the nation’s largest homosexual activist group devoted entirely to targeting kids in K-12 schools — GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network
Planned Parenthood Federation of America and SIECUS (Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States).
So what do these groups actually want taught in schools? Here is just a sampling:
”By the end of the 2nd grade, students should be able to … Identify different kinds of family structures” and “Demonstrate ways to show respect for different types of families.” Translation: By the 2nd grade, students should be taught that same-sex marriage and homosexual relationships are an option worthy of being embraced just like heterosexual marriages and relationships—regardless of their family’s deeply held religious beliefs See more at:  http://www.truetolerance.org/2013/national-sexuality-standards-vs-parental-rights/
